What's the number one thing you can do to kill your career? No doubt we each have our favourite answer. But take a closer look at the careers of your favourite politicians. Ever wonder how Bill Clinton could get away with numerous sordid infidelities? How Donald Trump can skate away from scandal like a penguin on ice?
How is it that such people remain electable, even likeable, despite their ugly doings?
The answer is posture. Pretty good posture is not the only factor that makes a person electable, but it is the most interesting one. It's effect is subtle, because we don't directly evaluate posture as we do education or track record. We don't measure posture, but we are unconsciously impressed by it, for good or bad. Great posture looks young and sounds easy. It enables a more free voice and an authentic emotional range. We resemble sprightly young children, and so can get away with things that crooked people can't.
